Perimenopause is the transition surrounding your final menstrual period. Hormone production becomes less predictable, and ovulation occurs less consistently.
Your periods may come closer together, become farther apart, or change in flow. You may also notice hot flashes, sleep disruption, mood changes, or difficulty concentrating. You can still become pregnant during this transition, even when periods are irregular.
Natural menopause marks the end of menstrual periods because of declining ovarian function. It is confirmed after 12 consecutive months without a period, when another condition, medication, or treatment does not explain the absence.
Menopause describes a milestone; postmenopause describes the years that follow.
Postmenopause is the stage of life after your final menstrual period. Symptoms may continue during this stage, and your health priorities may evolve. Understanding bone, heart, vaginal, and urinary health becomes an important part of ongoing care.
Experiences vary, but common concerns include:
Some women have few symptoms; others find that symptoms interfere with everyday life.
Menopause before age 40 is called premature menopause; menopause between ages 40 and 45 is considered early menopause. Removing both ovaries causes surgical menopause. Removing the uterus alone does not necessarily cause menopause if the ovaries remain.
You can ask for support before your periods stop. Discuss changing bleeding patterns with a healthcare professional, and have any bleeding after menopause evaluated.
